Attention campers and outdoor enthusiasts!

You may have seen our ad in the Ontario Parks Guide or online newsletter – this year Stewardship Ontario is launching Orange Drop Zones in many Provincial Parks.

The Orange Drop Zones will have cages to deposit used propane cylinders – ask Park Office staff where this is located. If a Drop Zone is not available, please take your used propane cylinder to your local Orange Drop site (use the search tool to the right). Making the drop ensures that these items are recycled responsibly. When in doubt, don’t throw it out, make the drop!

As you pack up your campsite and prepare to return home, please remember that batteries, aerosols and other hazardous and special waste items also need to be safely disposed of.

If left behind, or put in the garbage, propane cylinders, batteries and aerosols pose health-related risks to humans, animals and the environment. In landfill, chemicals and toxic gases may cause soil contamination and water pollution. And, chemical reactions can occur if these items are mixed with other materials in garbage or recycling bins.

Here’s what not to do

Because of risks to people and the environment:

• Don’t discharge leftover propane or aerosol materials into the atmosphere, even if the cylinder comes with a device to do this.
• Don’t deposit any propane cylinders, batteries or aerosol containers (that still contain material) into your Blue Box. Empty aerosol cans are accepted in the Blue Box.
• Don’t put cylinders, batteries or aerosol cans in the garbage.
• Don’t put anything other than propane cylinders in the propane cylinder cages.

When it comes to the environment, we all have a responsibility. Help keep the great outdoors great!
